We are organising a trip to the largest riverine island in the world, Majuli in Assam, this November. November 15th to 18th to be precise. Why Majuli? Why in November? You might ask. Because those are the Raas Mahotsav days, a centuries old tradition of the people of the island to pay their obeisance to Lord Krishna by enacting his Raas Leela, a spectacular event that draws people from all over the world to this island which is in UNESCO’s tentative list of world heritage sites . Many of you might know Majuli as a spiritual and religious site. But Majuli is more than that. Majuli is home to a number of birds like Yellow Bitterns, Lesser Adjutant Storks, Fishing Eagles, Lineated barbets, Oriental Magpie Robins, Shrikes, Redstarts, Kingfishers and many many more. Majuli is also the home of the Mising tribe who have their cultural and social backdrops rooted in the lands of Hwang Ho and Yang-sze-kiang. Let us explore Majuli together, have a traditional lunch in the village of Bengenati, visit the monasteries ( satras) of Uttar Kamalabari, Garmur, Auniati, Dakhinpata, Samaguri (the famous mask making satra), two old museums which houses artefacts and utensils belonging to the the Ahom kings and Molai Forest Reserve, the world’s largest single handedly man made forest created by Padmashree Jadhav Payeng.
